Managerial Routines and Organizational Strategies
Equipment:

it is necessary that each child has a mat
-
while it would be nice if everyone could have a proper yoga mat this is
not always possible, in this case simple gymnastics mats will do or a wrestling
mat where everyone finds their own space
-
props, such as wood blocks, foam blocks, belts, blankets and chairs are
necessary for many of the poses. Each child should at least have
a belt. Other props can be subsituted to perform similar functions
(i.e. storage box instead of chair).
Space:
-
for command style instruction students will be spaced out so they can see
the teacher and there is room to walk between mats, everyone should be
facing the same way
-
when using other methods of instruction groups should be spaced far enough
apart so they do not impede each others learning
Groups:
-
class will be allowed to make their own groups
-
they must ensure that everyone is included
-
emphasis should be placed on working with different people each class but
because of the sometimes personal nature of group work it is necessary
for students to be comfortable working with their partner
Speaking to the class:
-
the teacher will stand front and centre when demonstrating poses
-
if class is involved in individual work they should be called into a specific
spot for additional instructions
-
teacher should face distractions
-
if instructions are brief teacher should allow class to stay where they
are and move to a spot where everyone can see him/her
Observing the class:
-
the teacher will walk around students to give individual feedback
-
mats should be spaced out to allow for this
-
feedback should be positive and specific (i.e. Mary, you are doing a great
job of keeping your arms in alignment)
Adaptations for special needs in
our class:
-
ESL students
-
When communicating with students who know limited English, it is important
to use simple words, face the student when speaking, and use gestures.

Parapelegic
-
Due to the nature of yoga all people should be able to participate in some
form regardless of disabilities. After communicating with the student's
doctor and/or physiotherapist, adjustments for the student can be made.
This may include having the student sit on a mat and participate by doing
the arm movements and seated poses. The student will also be able
to participate in reciprocal teaching episodes by giving peers feedback
and instruction.

ADHD

Yoga will most likely have a positive effect on a child with ADHD as it
requires active concentration and develops internal focus. Standing
poses especially are difficult to master and keep children active.
If the student has difficulty with the quietening poses goals will be set
to increase time spent lying still (i.e. one minute the first week, two
minutes the next etc.).
Non-dressers:
-
students who do not have gym strip or are limited due to health reasons
have two options (to be decided by teacher):

participate to the best of their ability
-
use the digital camera to take photos of classmates, which will then be
used for the learning logs
Classroom rules:
-
do not eat one hour before class
-
ask for permission before going to the washroom
-
no chewing gum
-
wear shorts or tights - you must be able to see your knees
-
be respectful of each other
